Millions of men and women suffer with chronic neck or back pain that impacts their daily lives. It can make things we often take for granted like bending down to pick something up, sitting at a desk and even getting up from a chair, a painful and unbearable experience. While there are many common back problems, at Jordan Health Clinic we take a holistic approach to chiropractic care by treating the whole body as a complete unit. And if you haven’t been to a chiropractor in DeBary, FL and Volusia County lately, you are sure to be impressed with our clean, beautiful and relaxing health clinic and day spa.
Herniated (Ruptured) disc
A herniated or ruptured disc is a very common back problem. The individual bones that make up the spine are stacked between layers of soft, rubbery cushions called disks. Inside these disks are a soft center and when the outer shell ruptures, a jelly-like substance oozes from the disc which can irritate the nerves resulting in pain. Some individuals may also experience numbness in an arm or leg while others may not feel any symptoms at all. In many cases, we can repair a herniated disc without surgery.
Spinal arthritis
That annoying back pain you are experiencing may be a result of spinal arthritis, called spinal osteoarthritis. While there are many forms of arthritis, depending on the source and location of the disease, the lower back is the most common. Depending on the severity of the condition, spinal arthritis can be debilitating with muscle stiffness and a nagging pain in the back. The type of therapy we may recommend will be based on a careful and thorough examination and diagnosis. Treatments may include spinal manipulation, acupuncture and injections, among others.
Sciatica
Sciatica is often distinguishable from other forms of back pain because the pain in the sciatic nerve is accompanied by a shooting or burning pain down the back to the lower extremities. Many patients with sciatica have pain or numbness and experience muscle weakness in the right or left leg. A herniated disk, spinal stenosis and aging are some of the causes of sciatica. There are a variety of treatments available such as physical and muscular therapy as well as medications to help relieve the pain during treatment. Surgery may be an option in some more severe cases.
